Missions
Habitat for Humanity This national organization has
a very active group right here in Lubbock. During their yearly
Blitz-Build, they construct or repair homes for local residents who
qualify for assistance. The client must contribute a large number of hours
helping build their own home as well as helping others.
Salvation Army A monthly gift from Oakwood aids the
Salvation Army in their community outreach. The Salvation Army ministers
to the spiritual as well as the physical needs of Lubbock’s homeless
people.
Wes Putnam Wes is a Methodist evangelist who brings
his special services to congregations throughout the United States. He
always makes himself available for the 4th & 5th grade One Way Camp at
Ceta Canyon each summer. He has brought his Dayspring Revival and Bible
Quest for kids several times in recent years to UUMC.
Interfaith Hospitality House The Interfaith
Hospitality House is an outreach to homeless families in our community.
Oakwood partners with Agape UMC four times a year to help provide meals
and a Christian atmosphere of caring for these families.
McCurdy School McCurdy School is a K-12 Methodist
School in Espanola, New Mexico. The student body of 440 students is 80%
Hispanic, 15% Anglo, 4% Native American and 1% Afro-American. Volunteers
in Mission go out from Oakwood each spring to do a variety of tasks, from
carpentry projects to assistance in classrooms.
Wesley Foundation at Texas Tech Wesley Foundation
reaches out to Tech students in a variety of ways. The Foundation is
located in a building across the street from the Tech campus. The staff is
there to meet physical, spiritual, and emotional needs. Every spring, Tech
students reach out on mission trips across the nation and the
world.
South Plains Food Bank The South Plains Food Bank
encourages the members of our church to fast for one meal in October and
donate the cost of the meal to the Food Bank. In December, church members
spend a morning at the Food Bank packing boxes to help feed needy
Lubbockites.
Sonscape Sonscape is a non-denominational retreat
focusing on spiritual formation and burn-out prevention for pastors and
their spouses. It provides a setting in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to
refresh, renew, and revitalize those in full time Christian
Ministry.
Mark & Diane Abbott The Abbott family is
serving full time as Christian missionaries in Spain. Mark is Dean of a
University, Diane has her corner and assists in many ways. Students from
all nations come to learn of God and then go back to their country and
take the message.
Jonathan & Lisa Mayo The Mayos’ serve as
missionaries in Uganda. They are with World Gospel Mission. They are part
of a team that trains nationals to carry out the Great
Commission.
Across the Street Food Pantry Oakwood members
supply specific food items several times a year to keep this pantry at
Vandelia Church of Christ open and helping needy Lubbock
families.
Current Christmas Project – Christmas
Child Samaritans Purse is the outreach arm of the Franklin Graham
Ministries. Each fall, shoeboxes are filled with gifts for children. Each
box is designated girl or boy and is filled with age appropriate gifts.
They are dispersed in December to needy children world wide.
Meals On Wheels Many people cannot cook meals for
themselves due to handicaps and health. Lubbock’s home bound can look
forward to one ot nutritious meal each day and a visit from a
volunteer.
Contact Lubbock Listens by telephone trought
trained volunteers to those in need of encouragement. Many suicides have
been interviened and a new path taken because of these faithful 24 hour
listeners.

N.H. House Serving a Wade County community with
baby needs, medicine and sack lunches for the homeless. They also offer
assistance in mnay ways to children.
Women’s Protective Services Cares for women and
children abused in need of shelter. A light to those struggling to escape
violence in our community
Les and Cara Burrus Les, Carla and their two
daughters are missionaries in France. Les heads a Camp called Champfluri
with Carla and the girls assistance. Many come from all countries to study
and hear God’s message. |
